Frequently asked questions

When someone dies, the first steps will depend on how and where the person passed away. Our step-by-step guides will walk you through the practical steps. For additional support and personal advice, please get in touch with us.

You don't have to make an appointment at our funeral homes. However, doing so will ensure that someone can be available to cater to your needs. When arranging a funeral, our Funeral Directors are happy to visit you in your own home, if required.

Third party funeral costs are additional charges which we will manage for you and attach to your single invoice. Get in touch with us to confirm costs and plan a funeral to fit your budget.

If you choose to arrange the funeral with us, you will be given the option of a complimentary Funeral Notice. We will set it up for you using the details discussed during the arrangements. All we need is an email address.

Dignity Funeral Plans let you pay for your funeral in advance and at today's price. It's a way of taking control of the unexpected, setting out the arrangements and limiting the costs by paying for the services included in the funeral plan upfront.

From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.

A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.

Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

THE CHAIR

In all my decades of advancing years

I have sat on many a chairs

From school, in aeroplanes and even at the dentist

Right down to the sofas I just couldn’t resist

But I have never sat on a chair

Where the only reason why I’m there

Is to discuss my final resting place

Once I’ve said goodbye to life’s rat race.

This chair I only need to sit on one time

To ponder and make up my mind

Indeed the chair holds status

Since it is a chair that must be sat on by all of us

It’s a chair that we would want to bypass

Yet the chair need not ask

The chair could also fill you with fear

But it didn’t…because Dawn was there.

Excellent, really excellent. Everything for my late husband was handled really well. The funeral director Dawn was so kind and helpful. The funeral itself was perfect and went very smoothly. I really couldn’t ask for better. I would recommend W. English without any hesitation.

My wife's brother passed away unexpectedly in July 2023 and subsequently the coroner was involved. My wife was and still is seriously ill and we anticipated some time to make arrangements for the funeral, and advice from the coroner that we could procede. We made contact with a well know national funeral directors in August, and several times after, without success. In late November we received advice unexpectedly that the body had been released and we should procede with funeral arrangement. We made a choice to contact Alfred-English in Walthamstow to discuss our problem, and made contact with Chloe Azfal who assured us that we should not be concerned and all would be arranged. After a telephone call with my wife the following day, 4th December to confirm facts, and the exchange of documentation, arrangements were put in place and a date set for the cremation, within 2 days of our first contact with Chloe, for a cremation on the 15th of December. Throughout the days leading up to the funeral, Chloe was supportive, prompt on the exchange of infomation, and provided advice and a contact for the funeral service. The enormous load taken from our shoulders, and the superb management of this sad event was exemplary and professional. Thank you Chloe.
