From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
W English and Sons were fantastic with the funeral for my father in 2017 and my mother in 2025. They are professional and kind. Recommended.
Went to my friends funeral at City of London yesterday coordinated by English funeral directors.
Was very impressed by how the service went and taking care of the mourners.
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to For W English & Sons for their exceptional service in creating my mother's grave. Throughout the entire process, their team was not only professional but also incredibly kind and friendly. They took the time to explain everything to me in detail, which I greatly appreciated. Additionally, their timely responses to my queries made the entire experience much smoother. Thank you for your dedication and excellent service during such a sensitive time.
Kimberley is rude and abrupt, I called to seek information on a relative that had passed and she was cold, rude, abrupt and assertive at an already upsetting time. I would steer clear of this company and their vile staff.
Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. We are sorry that you were unhappy with the service you received and would be grateful if you could contact our Complaint Resolutions Team, to discuss your concerns further on 0800 783 7171 between the hours of 09:00 & 17:00
Kimberley was very professional and compassionate. She was extremely helpful throughout the whole process of arranging our mum's funeral. The day went off well and the whole team were a great support. I have no hesitation in recommending W English & Son.
